Free Hosting

Free hosting is a subset of web hosting. Generally free hosting is offered in a shared hosting enviroment. It's "free" to you, but not to the folks offering it, and they try to recoup their costs by placing advertisements on your site.

Those advertisements usually come in the form of banners, popups, rich media, and/or sometimes scripts which highlight words in your content and link them to sites of advertisers paying for access to those words.

Often you'll get sent promotional emails, and you may well have your email address sold to any budding capitalist on the planet willing to pay your host enough to obtain their subscriber list. At that point, your email address may find it's way into every seedy scum infested marketing house on earth and your email mailbox will continue to become less and less useful as you find yourself wading through more and more spam.

New advertisement delivery methods spawn like viruses, so this list can never be comprehensive. If you are trying to decide where the line is as to what you find acceptable, just consider that the number of and types of delivery methods will fluxuate. And, the content within those ads while touted to adhere to some standard of decency by most web hosts' terms of service and other stated policy governance, are never guaranteed not to offend you or your visitors.
